My ’76 El Camino. Daily driver for several years. I have enjoyed working on her and making it a great car to drive.
Classic Cragar wheels!
I do my best to avoid mechanic shops for the steep bill and cause I take pride in my work unlike a lot of shops.
This job illustrates why I prefer to do the work myself. I took my new-to-me car to the most reputable and most expensive shop I could find to take care of a rear axle seal leak. After taking it in for the third time all was good. Until 4 years later when the seal blew again. After my own meticulous investigation into the reason, found that the axle housing was full of metal shavings. Most likely a wheel bearing had gone bad before I owned the car and the reputable shop didn’t take the time or care to discover the metal shavings.
I cleaned up the axle housing to be free of the many many metal shavings I found. The bearing had not quite gone bad when I pulled the axle but it was close. Most shops just don’t give our cars the care that we can give them with the simple maintenance and keeping an eye on things.
